If I Had Only Knew (Original)

Once I thought I found it all
My life's hopes and dreams within you,
But time proves me wrong yet again.
Maybe things would change if only I knew...

Maybe if I knew back then
That your heart would sing a different song
Maybe if I had known that much
I wouldn't have held on for so long.

If I knew that I'd be all alone,
Here begging to hear your voice,
Then instead of bleeding my heart out,
I would have made a different choice.

I think it's clear to everyone
That love between us will never be.
I think everyone realizes,
What this all meant to me.

The world can finally see
That I was dead and wasting away.
Let them see that within you,
I've found the strength to go another day.

My heart would never love again,
My life no longer had any value.
But by chance I opened my eyes,
And heart began to beat as I saw you.

My life finally had meaning,
For once I had something worth fighting for.
My heart's flame blazed again,
I found you, I couldn't ask for anything more.

But that light in my hopeless world
Quickly faded away
As I awoke to the brutal truth.
As I realized I'd be the only one to say...

Never would those words cross your lips
I'd fall back into my despair,
I'd never known such a lonliness,
A lonliness growing to great to bear.

I should have known better,
I should have known not to throw my heart away,
To give it to you, to believe in you.
I should've known the moment was to great to stay.

Oh the things I would have changed
If I had at last only knew,
If I had just once been able to see,
That this dream was to good to be true.

Yes, but poetry doesn't have to follow traditional rules.

ALOT of poems used made up words
Mess up tenses
And screw up punctuation.

All intentionally, that's the beauty in poetry, you can't go wrong.
"Mistakes" give it a unique beauty.

The kind of poetry I don't like is the kind that messes up my favorite thing. Grammar. I especially dislike it when people use improper grammar on purpose. Lol.

poetry has alot of different things you can do with it. some people prefer traditional writing techniques,while others use messed up stuff like what relyh said. personal preferances rule. thats why we have different kinds of music. rock,rap,and anything els u can think of is just a poem sung in a defferent way. rock wont sound right sung as a rap,and poems are just the same. you cant use traditional and have the same feel as the messed up version. its all what u like better.

Well normally I follow traditional rules.
But sometimes it's easier with rhyme scheme so I just throw the rules out the window.

But thanks for pointing that out Francie lol.

Thus why I dislike rap because they don't know how to conjugate verbs or properly use pronouns. It. Makes. Me. Sick. Lol.
